Galešnjak; heart in a heart of Adriatic

Welcome to Croatia, the land of natural beauties and remarkable wonders of nature!

Man is capable of many achievements but there is nothing more beautiful than creation made by mother nature, do you agree?

Galešnjak is one of the untouched gifts of nature, a small, uninhabited island in the Pašman Channel, also known as the Island of Love and the Island of Lovers.

It is located between the island of Pašman and the town of Turanj on the mainland, and attracted the attention of the domestic and world public in 2008 when Google Earth declared it one of the few natural heart-shaped phenomena. Galešnjak was first recorded by Napoleon's cartographer Charles-François Beautemps-Beaupré on the map of Dalmatia at the beginning of the 19th century, when he drew his almost perfect heart shape. This atlas is kept today in the University Library in Zadar. However, the already mentioned Google Earth is responsible for its fame. The area of the islet is 0.132 square kilometers, and the length of its coastal belt is 1545 meters with the highest peak at 36 m above sea level.

You are probably wondering if there are any houses there or can you go visit it, right?

As we already mentioned, the island is uninhabited and there are no buildings on it. It is in private ownership but you can visit it by boat and spend the day there swimming or sunbathing. Easiest way to visit it is from Zadar or from the island of Pašman. If you want to spend the night there you will have to camp there and ask for permission first, but you will surely be granted.

Really interesting fact is that Galešnjak is not the only heart-shaped island in the Adriatic Sea. There are several more and it is remarkable that they are all located near Zadar!

The island of Lukovnik looks most similar to Galešnjak. Not far from Galešnjak, only40 km, Lukovnik is located right in front of Tribunj.

The islet of Rončić is almost identical in shape to Lukovnik, but with slightly different vegetation and flatter terrain. It is not far from the previous two either, because it is part of the Kornati archipelago.

A bushier and greener heart has found its place in front of Sali on Dugi otok, and it is called Mrtonjak. Like other neighboring hearts, this one is also uninhabited.

The opposite of all the upper islands is a completely bare cliff, like its neighbors in the Podvelebit Channel where the wind does not forgive neither the sea nor the mainland. The islet of Lisac is located right in front of the town and port of Sv. Juraj.

With this amount of love you must have wished to visit Zadar and all these islands with your better half?

Have a romantic holiday,
