Dalmatia, our beautiful Dalmatia, the Mediterranean... a place where no one is in a hurry, coffee is drunk for hours at any time of the day and you can experience some of the most original pick up lines if you are a member of the fairer sex.
You go out to the city, cafe terraces are full of people, individuals enjoy in the sun like lizards. Maybe you are wondering what’s going on, do people work here? :) Yeah, people work here and can’t wait to go out for a break and sit in the sun and have a coffee. Take it easy ... No rush. "Vrag odnija prišu" - as it would be said here in Dalmatia. Today we will introduce you to the indispensable symbols of Dalmatia and the Mediterranean in general, so if you find yourself in one of these situations to know that this is completely normal in Dalmatia.:)
Drinking coffee
Going for a coffee is not just an ordinary invitation to drink coffee, it is an invitation to socialize not only over coffee, but it can be tea, beer, whiskey or any other beverage. All that matters is this ritual that has almost nothing to do with Western way of life that we see in the movies: individuals carrying coffee to go, while running to work and drinking it fast. No, that has nothing to do with us. Even the Italians who are so close to us have a ritual of drinking espresso very quickly, so we have nothing in common with them either. No, this is something completely different, there is no rush here. Here coffee is drunk for hours, in the sun, sunglasses are a must have, and a cafe bar in a busy place where lot of people pass by, so you have something to watch and comment on.
Fjaka
In fact, "fjaka" is associated with drinking coffee for hours. You were caught on "fjaka", what else to do but get some rest over coffee. What is "fjaka"? Fjaka is a sublime state of mind that you are born with if you are from Dalmatia. It’s not something you can learn, it’s something that’s in you, primaeval. We have to mention that it’s not laziness, it’s a state of mind that catches you when the temperatures are too high and you just don’t want to do anything but rest. It usually starts in the middle of the day, after a hot July day. Simply put, it is a psychophysical state in which you do not strive for anything and do not want (and cannot) do anything. And it's not your fault, that's right, it's just "fjaka"! So if you are in Dalmatia and you see people doing nothing but resting join them!
Seagulls
Yes, Dalmatia is full of seagulls, those big birds that take live food or scavenge opportunistically. But today we are not talking about an animal species but a human one. You have certainly never heard of Dalmatian "galeb" (seagull) and their art of seduction so we will introduce you to this interesting topic. For those who still do not understand what seagulls are and what they do, those are men from Dalmatia who seduce foreign women. What is "galebarenje"? It is a special art of seducing women, and only tourists, who come to Dalmatia from northern European countries on vacation. Why exactly these men are called seagulls and when it actually all started no one really knows. It is a tradition passed down from generation to generation. This phenomenon is maybe named after the maneuver that the seagull performs when fishing, he falls sharply on its prey, so young men in Dalmatia "pick" foreign girls because they know they have very little time to conquer them. Domestic girls are not interesting to them because they know who these guys are, but foreign women don't know, so they can pretend to be smart or some kind of intellectuals and whoever they want. It is an art of seduction that is slowly dying out. So girls, watch out for seagulls! :)
Have fun in Dalmatia!
